5-year old Lakshmi revises her lessons from school, while her mother
Kusum Devi is completing her tailoring orders due the day after. They
are currently leading a much better life than they were doing a year
and half ago.
The mother-daughter duo was rehabilitated and counselled by a BADLAV
team working under the Bhikshavrati Mukti Abhiyan. Our team, working
on a week-long campaign, had found them begging outside a taxi stand.
Coming from a very underprivileged background, they were ousted by her
in-laws after her husband’s untimely death. Kusum had nowhere to go;
with no other alternative left, she had to resort to begging, in order
to feed the toddler and herself. The team interacted with her and
found that she was quite adept at household chores. They were brought
to our rehabilitation centre and given food and accommodation till we
could find a caretaker’s job for Kusum. Soon after, we could also get
Lakshmi admitted to the local Government primary school. Now, Kusum
Devi even volunteers at Badlav initiatives and campaigns once in a
Life is quite better now, for the both of them. Kusum even dreams for
her duaghter to get good education and stand on her own feet someday.
She says she’s ready to go to any extent to make sure her daughter
gets a quality education.
We’re glad we could bring about this badlav in their lives.
