Badlav is a family to me, I run a chaat stall now: Shiv Ratan
Shiv Ratan came down to the capital city of Lucknow from the Barabanki district of Uttar
Pradesh, following an ugly spat with his family. For 15 long years after
that, he spent his life on footpaths and worked as a labourer and
sometimes as a rickshaw puller to earn a living. Poor conditions often
made him go days without proper food and nourishment, and at a certain
point in 2018, he had gotten seriously ill. To quell his hunger, he
started begging at the Hanuman Setu temple. His body had completely
Badlav helped him getting the right assistance for his deteriorating
health. When, 16 years later, he returned home, he exclaims with grief, that his
family members refused to recognize him.
“They had assumed that I must have been dead by now.” He was also
saddened by the news of his parents’ death during the time he was
away. Shiv Ratan regards Badlav as his family that has helped him to overcome the
biggest struggles in his life and helped him to stand on his own feet.
He now earns a sustainable living by
running a chaat stall and is glad that he does not have to beg
anymore. He has been able to start a good life afresh.
